After reading this post and talking with Scott, I figured I’d better get these headaches checked out. So, I had my first appt. with the neurologist on Tuesday … long story short, he told me to cut out the caffiene. Now, I’ve been off soda for almost two months, so I’m thinking “are you crazy? I HAVE cut out the caffiene.”
But have I really?
Anyone who’s tried to quit drinking soda will tell you of the horrible caffiene headaches, right? So, what do you do? Down a couple aspirin, or in my case a few Excedrin migraine. Wanna know why that works so well to get rid of a caffiene headache? Cause it has roughly the same amoutn of caffeine as 3 Pepsis. I knew those little pills had caffiene, but I didn’t realize it was that much! Check out the caffiene contents:
Pepsi (my personal fav.) – 38 mg
Coke (my second fav) – 34.5 mg
Coffee – 90-150 mg
Excedrin Migraine – 130 mg (per two capsules)
So, I’ve quit the soda (yay me!) but not the caffiene (boo, hiss). Now what? Doc says to stop taking ALL over the counter headache medicine. He says I’ll go through caffeine withdrawal (ew) and hopefully I’ll be back to normal in 3 to 5 days. After that, we can determine if the headaches were caused by the medicine (a rebound headache) or if there’s something more serious going on.
Thankfully, I was able to get started on that oh-so-fun-sounding caffeine withdrawal right away since I hadn’t taken anything that morning for the headache I had when I woke up. Let me tell you something about caffeine withdrawal … it blows BIG time. Honestly, I thought “oh, it wont’ be so bad, I’ve done this before.” HA! Sure, I’ve “quit” caffeine before … I stopped drinking soda, and would get a headache and take some meds – that had caffeine in them. I have to laugh about it now, cause it is funny. But the last two days, I haven’t been laughing at all.
Some of the symptoms of caffeine withdrawal (from Johns Hopkins University):
- Difficulty concentrating
- work difficulty
- flu-like symptoms (nausea/vomiting, muscle aches/stiffness, hot and cold spells)
I definitely had the headaches, irritability, nausea/vomiting, muscle aches/stiffness and depression. (I’d add the sleepiness and fatigue in there, but I’m ALWAYS sleepy.) Let’s just say I haven’t been the most pleasant person to live with the last few days.
So, what does this mean now? Well, I’m two days officially caffeine free (doc said my cup of tea every now and then is OK – esp. since it only has 20 mg caffeine per cup) and I’ve gotten past the worst of the withdrawal symptoms. I hope. Now, all that’s left is keeping track of the headaches I do get.
And, oh yeah, get married in like 8 days!
